We are the brown shoes to the world’s tuxedo.

Start here

George Gobel made a remark one time on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” that we, the church, should really pay attention to. Now, you may ask what does a comedian like George Gobel have to do with us, the church? He stated to Johnny Carson, “Do you ever feel like a pair of brown shoes, and the world’s a tuxedo”? Let’s delve deeper into what I am trying to convey.

In 1 Samuel chapter 8, the elders of Israel gathered themselves unto Samuel wanting him to place a king over them to judge them. Samuel was very displeased with them forsking him to do this, yet, God told him to grant their desire, yet protest with them. God even told Samuel they hadn’t rejected him(Samuel), but Him.

God then gives them Saul, the son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin. At first, he seems to do quite well, and even prophesied through the Spirit of God, yet you can read how the stronger his power became, the more rebellious he became towards what God told him to do through Samuel’s sayings. In 1 Samuel chapter 15, it comes to the proverbial head when Saul brought back sheep and oxen from destroying the Amalekites. God told Saul through Samuel to completely destroy, annihilate the Amalites, even the women, children and sucklings, also their oxen and sheep, camels and asses. Yet, Saul brought back the best sheep and oxen. When Samuel confronts him about not killing everything, he stated he brought those sheep and oxen back to use to sacrifice unto God. Samuel then told this to Saul, “Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from being king”(1 Samuel 15:22,23). It was from that very moment Israel was taken from Saul and given unto another king, David, the son of Jesse, of the tribe of Judah.

Now, in Acts 27, you can read where Apostle Paul had warned the captain of the ship he was sailing on that their voyage would be treacherous, and yet, he chose to believe the words of another man. Here’s those verses:

“Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past, Paul admonished them, And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives. Nevertheless the centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken by Paul(Acts 27:9-11).

The reason why I used these verses is because the world wants us, the church, to succumb to them, and not them to us. The world appoves of gay marriage, abortions, living together outside of wedlock, anything and everything in rebellion to the Record of God. The world is in darkness until God calls them into His marvellous Light. Now, there’s more than one application to the word “world”. There’s the “world” which is the planet earth, and we live in it until the good Lord calls us out of it and takes us home. Then there’s the “world” which is referring to sinners. We are of the “world”(planet earth), but no longer of the “world”(called out of sin into His Light). The world(sinners) is in darkness, and what communion does Light have with darkness? Apostle Paul so eloquently wrote this; ” Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you. And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty(2 Corinthians 6:14-18).

And you can see their influences slowly creeping into the local church(es). Some churches are taking in gays/lesbians, and some are even ordaining them into their ministries. You can read where members of local churches are approving abortions, advocating the use of drugs, etc. We need to be the “brown shoes” to the world’d tuxedo and not blend in with the world. God has called us out of the world; we are in the world, but not of the world any longer. We have been seperated from the world by His grace. We have to stand on what the Record of God says, and even if it leads to us being decapitated, or imprisioned, we need not waiver from what it says.

I will leave you with these verses:

John 15:19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Let us stand out from the world, and be a light unto those who are in darkness that they may see our good works and glorify our Father which is in heaven.
